Each English 9/10 student is required to read a novel of their CHOICE during the second semester. He or she will be required to complete the reading and keep a log in their "Reading Journals" that reflect the novel. Students will be given Independent Reading time in class, but some may have to read outside of class in order to complete the reading and projects by their due date. Freshmen are required to read a minimum of four novels throughout the school year.
WHY "CHOICE" NOVEL?
Too often, students lose their love of reading when they are forced to read books that are of no interest to them. By allowing students to choose the books they read, my hope is that they will find joy in reading again. Choice Novels give students an opportunity to decide what they want to read and it gives them a chance to pick content that interests them. (i.e. sports, mystery, romance, science fiction, etc.)
CHOICE NOVEL READING JOURNAL
Students will be asked to write weekly reflections over the choice novels they read. These will be completed in the "Reflections" section of your Reading Journal. These reflection should discuss what you like or dislike about the novel, your thoughts on the author's writing, a reaction to characters that you like or dislike, your reaction to the plot, and any other thoughts you have about the story. You will also need to make sure you log the titles, author names, pages, and start & end dates in the Table of Contents portion of your Reading Journals.
WHAT DO I DO DURING INDEPENDENT READING WHEN I FINISH MY NOVEL?
Short answer: read another book. Regardless of how many books you read this year, you will continue to utilize the independent reading time in class throughout the entire school year.
